The word Onyx comes from the Greek word “onux”, which means nail. It is a type of chalcedony that belongs to the silicate minerals with a chemical composition of SiO2. Onyx is characterized by its distinctive parallel banding pattern, the hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale and the trigonal crystal system. Onyx derives from many different countries including Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Uruguay, Iran, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Madagascar, the USA, and India.
