STONE DETAILS
The name serpentine comes from the Latin word serpens, meaning snake, because of the mottled and scaly surface of some serpentine minerals that resemble snake skin. The name Serpentine does not simply refer to a single mineral, but is used to describe a large group of silicate minerals, belonging to the category of phyllosilicates. Chrysolite, Antigorite and Lizardite are three of the primary serpentine minerals. Serpentine minerals are considered soft minerals, as their hardness ranges from 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, they are characterized by a monoclinic crystal system, and their color is usually green with various shades. Some notable sources of serpentine are found in areas of the USA, New Zealand, Cyprus, Italy, England, Cuba, the Alps and the Balkan Peninsula.
