STONE DETAILS
Pyrite The word “pyrite” is taken from the Greek word «pyr» meaning Fire. That name was given to the mineral, as Pyrite was used to spark flames to light fires. Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an iron disulfide, which is characterized by the cubic crystal system and the hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Pyrite is derived mostly from Peru, the USA, Bolivia and Spain.
Shungite Shungite took its name from the village Shunga, in Karelia in Russia, because was first found in a deposit near to this village. It is mainly composed of amorphous silicon dioxide and carbon, containing also trace elements. Depending on the concentration of carbon in Shungite there are three different types of this mineral (Type I, II or III). Shungite has the great potential for application in technology and medicine, such as water purification, electromagnetic radiation protection and healing practices, due to its unique properties which are attributed to the presence of fullerenes. Shungite is characterized by the hardness of 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale and it derives mainly from Russia, but it can also be found in some other places, such as in the USA, Canada and Kazakhstan.
