STONE DETAILS
The name “Larimar” comes from the name of Méndez’s daughter, Larissa – who rediscovered Larimar – and the Spanish word “mar”, meaning sea, because of the stone’s colour, which resembles the colour of the ocean. Larimar is a type of pectolite belonging to the inosilicate group, with the chemical formula NaCa2Si3O8(OH). It may also contain traces of copper, which contributes to its blue colouring. It is characterised by a hardness of 4,5-5 on the Mohs scale and a triclinic crystallisation system. The characteristic blue colour of Larimar ranges from light blue to deep turquoise with interesting patterns such as swirls and streaks. Larimar is mainly found in the city of Barahona in the Dominican Republic, but there are small deposits in other parts of the world, such as the Bahamas, the USA, Italy, Finland, Germany and Austria.
