STONE DETAILS

The word opal comes from the Sanskrit word “upala” which means gemstone. Opal is a hydrated silicate mineral, characterized by the amorphous crystal system and the hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. When white light enters an opal it interacts with tiny silica spheres, which make up its structure. This interaction causes the diffraction of light into its component colors. This is why opal makes iridescences and this phenomenon is called opalescence. Green Opal is derived mainly from Australia, Mexico, Brazil, the USA, Indonesea, Canada, South Africa, Peru and Madagascar.
