FOSSIL DETAILS
Trilobites were marine invertebrate animals, belonging to the phylum Arthropoda and they existed from early in the Cambrian Period (520 million years ago) until in the end of the Permian Period (250 million years ago). The name is derived from the three (tri-) lobed structure of the exoskeleton that covered the soft parts of the animal, providing support and protection. Usually only the dorsal part of the exoskeleton was fossilised. The exoskeleton is divided from front to back into cephalon (head-shield), thorax and pygidium (tail-shield).The thorax was flexible, enabling the animal to roll into a ball, in order to protect its vulnerable ventral side in times of danger. Also, there is a central axis (axial lobe) that divides the animal in two side regions (lobes) called pleurae. The word “trilobite” refers to this side-to-side partition, rather than the cephalon, thorax and pygidium. Trilobite fossils are derived mainly from Siberia, Morocco, North America and Spain. The specific species of Trilobite is called Flexicalymene, it belongs to the group Phacopida and the subgroup Calymenidae. This is a common genus, usually preserved as internal and external moulds in limonitic mudstone nodules and it was an inhabitant of warm seas. These species lived during the late Ordovician period and their typical length was approximately 6cm. This kind of Trilobite comes from Morocco.
