AMMONITE DETAILS
Its name is due to its spiral shape and it took it from the Egyptian god Ammon, who wears ram horns in many representations. The shape of ram horns resembles the spiral shape of Ammonite. The Ammonites appeared during the Paleozoic century (Devonian period ~400 mya) and disappeared completely at the end of Mesozoic century (Cretaceous period ~ 66 mya). The Ammonites were sea creatures (mollusks), belonging to the category of cephalopods and they were products of the evolution of nautiloids. Thanks to the unique stracture of their shell, which was divided into chambers, they could swim. So, by taking in or remove water in the chambers they could go up or down in the sea. This specific kind of Ammonite belongs to the Cleoniceras genus and lived during the Middle Cretaceous period approximately 100-115 million years ago. The exterior of the Ammonite has been polished to reveal the oak-leaf suture pattern under the outer surface of the shell. This kind of Ammonite derives mostly from Madagascar.
