Agate is a variety of chalcedony, belonging to the family of microcrystalline quartz. It is a silicate mineral with a chemical formula SiO₂   (silicon dioxide) and it belongs to the tectosilicate group. Agate is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale. Agate is derived from many different places, including Brazil, the USA, Africa, India, Uruguay, Peru and Mexico.
