Tourmaline The name has its origins in the Sri Lankan language, and their word “touramali”, which is a word they used to describe their precious stones. Tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral, which is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale. Tourmaline comes in different colours, and every colour has its own name- for example Green Tourmaline is known as Chrome Tourmaline. The different colours are generally referred to by their identifying colour. Tourmaline can be found in various countries, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, the USA and Norway.
Quartz The name Quartz derives from the German word “Quartz” that is of Slavic origin. The Ancient Greeks referred to quartz as “xalazias” that derives from the Greek word “xalaza”, which means hail, due to the fact that in ancient times many people believed that it is solidified water. Quartz is a silicate mineral, belonging to the group of the tectosilicates and it has a chemical formula of SiO2. Quartz is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. It can be found in many different places worldwide, including Brazil, the USA, Sri Lanka, India and Madagascar.
