Jasper The origins of this name are not well documented, but the roots are almost certainly from the Far East. Jasper is a member of the Quartz family, which is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Hematite Hematite comes from the Greek word “aima” which means Blood and it is an Iron Oxide. It is characterized by a hexagonal crystal system and a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale. Hematite can be found in various countries, including Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand.
