The word Onyx comes from the ancient Greek and means nail. It is a silicone dioxide-that is a type of Quartz, and has a hardness of 6- 7 on the Mohs scale. It is characterized by the trigonal crystal system, and can be found in Brazil, Mexico, Algeria, Uruguay and India, to name just a few.
