STONE DETAILS

Spinel Spinel takes its name from the Latin word “spina” which means thorn/prickle, due to the barbed pints of its crystals which look like thorns. Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide mineral, which is characterized by the isometric crystal system and the hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. Spinel can be found in different countries, including Brazil, Australia, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and the USA.

Dioptase The name Dioptase is derived from the Greek words “dia” and “optomai”, meaning “doubling” and “visible”, referring to the mineral’s two cleavage directions, which are visible inside crystals. It is a hydrous copper silicate mineral and it belongs to the category of cyclosilicates. Sometimes it can be found as inclusions within Quartz. It is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 5-5.5 on the Mohs scale. Dioptase can be found in many different parts of the world, including the USA, Chile, Argentina, Romania, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Obsidian The word Obsidian originates from Roman Obsius, who is accepted as being the one who first discovered and introduced obsidian from Ethiopia.  Obsidian is a volcanic mineral (natural volcanic glass), which is mainly composed of silicon dioxide and it derives from volcanic regions. As a “glass,” obsidian is chemically unstable. With the passage of time, obsidian begins to crystallize, but this process does not happen at a uniform rate throughout the rock. As a result, radial clusters of white or gray cristobalite crystals are formed within the obsidian. These specimens are referred to as “snowflake obsidian”. Obsidian is characterized by the hardness of 5.5- 6 on the Mohs scale and it usually has dark color with glassy texture. Obsidian can be found in many countries such as the USA, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iceland, Italy and Mexico. There are also some other types of Obsidian such as rainbow, which is more common in Mexico and snowflake, which is more common in Italy, Iceland and the USA.
