AMMONITE DETAILS
Its name is due to its spiral shape and it took it from the Egyptian god Ammon, who wears ram horns in many representations. The shape of ram horns resembles the spiral shape of Ammonite. Ammonites appeared during the Palaeozoic period about 400 million years ago and disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago. Ammonites were marine molluscs and belonged to the cephalopod group, along with today’s squid, cuttlefish and octopus. The ammonite had a spiral shell divided into chambers. Through the controlled entry or exit of water into or out of the chambers, it could regulate its buoyancy and move through the water, achieving up and down movements in the sea depth. Perisphinctes is an extinct genus of cephalopod that lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic period, around 170 to 150 million years ago. These ammonites are from Madagascar and they are commonly white to tan in color.
