AMMONITE DETAILS

Its name is due to its spiral shape and it took it from the Egyptian god Ammon, who wears ram horns in many representations. The shape of ram horns resembles the spiral shape of Ammonite. The Ammonites appeared during the Paleozoic century (Devonian period ~400 mya) and disappeared completely at the end of Mesozoic century (Cretaceous period ~ 66 mya). The Ammonites were sea creatures (mollusks), belonging to the category of cephalopods and they were products of the evolution of nautiloids. Thanks to the unique stracture of their shell, which was divided into chambers, they could swim. So, by taking in or remove water in the chambers they could go up or down in the sea. This specific kind of Ammonite is a fossil from the time of dinosaurs and it is approximately 100-115 million years old ( Middle Cretaceous period). It can be found in different places, including Madagascar, Texas, Hungary, France and Morocco.
