The word “pyrite” is taken from the Greek word «pyr» meaning Fire. That name was given to the mineral, as Pyrite was used to spark flames to light fires. Pyrite, or iron pyrite, is an iron disulfide, which is characterized by the cubic crystal system and the hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Pyrite is derived mostly from Peru, the USA, Bolivia and Spain.
