STONE DETAILS
Septarian nodules, also known as Dragonstone, are a type of concretion that formed during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 66 to 100 million years ago. These nodules are believed to have formed in marine environments as mud, clay, and organic material were deposited on the seafloor. Over millions of years, these materials were cemented together by minerals such as calcium carbonate. The name “septarian” comes from the word “septum,” meaning “partition,” due to the cracked or partitioned appearance of the nodules. The nodules themselves consist of a mix of rock, mineral, and organic matter. The formation process involved the gradual hardening and cementing of a central mass of mud, followed by the creation of cracks as the material dried and shrank. These cracks were later filled with minerals, giving the nodules their distinctive look. Septarian nodules are found in various locations, including the Gulf of Mexico, Southern Utah, Morocco, and Madagascar.
