PETRIFIED WOOD DETAILS

Petrified wood is formed when plant material is buried by sediment that keeps it protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. Then, underwater, which is rich in dissolved minerals flows through the sediment, replacing gradually the organic part of the wood with silica, calcite, pyrite or another inorganic material like opal. The result of this time-consuming process is the transformation of the wood into a fossil after many million years. Petrified wood is derived mostly from different places in the USA such as Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, from Australia and Madagascar.
