The name smoky quartz was given to this mineral because of its appearance, that reminds the hues of smoke-infused crystal. It is a type of quartz composed of silicon dioxide and belongs to silicate minerals and the tectosilicate group. Its colour ranges from yellowish-brown to a deep brown, so dark that sometimes it appears to be black. It is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Smoky quartz can be found in different countries including Brazil, Africa, Madagascar, Switzerland, Scotland, Ukraine, Russia and the USA.
