STONE DETAILS
Its name derives from the combination of the word “sard”, referring to the city Sardis in modern-day Turkey, where the sard stone was found and the Greek word “onyx”, meaning nail. Sardonyx is silicate mineral that is composed of alternating layers of reddish-brown and orange-brown sard, and white or black onyx, which are two types of chalcedony. This combination creates a very beautiful reddish zebra-striped stone with white and black bands. It is characterized by the hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale and the trigonal crystal system. Sardonyx can be found in different places including India, Madagascar, Brazil, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Uruguay and the USA.
